Naegleria Fowleri
Q. What is Naegleria Fowleri?
Naegleria Fowleri, also known as BRAIN-EATING AMOEBA is amongst the most dangerous infection that can directly lead to death within a few days. As the name suggests, a single-celled organism, AMOEBA, slowly and gradually eats away the brain after it has entered.
Q. What are the major sources?
It's found in freshwater sources i.e. swimming pools, freshwater ponds, hot springs, lakes etc as well as contaminated water resources i.e. poorly maintained swimming pools (or you can say by some water sources that may actually be containing amoeba).
Q. How is it actually transferred?
One of the most important point to be remembered is that it can only be caused when infected water enters through your nose and then to the brain. Additionally, drinking such infected or contaminated water doesn't cause Naegleria.
Q. What're the major symptoms of Naegleria?
Main symptoms are fever, headache, nausea, stiff neck, etc.
Q. How to prevent naegleria?
In order to prevent it, avoid contaminated, polluted, infected types of water from entering your nose. Moreover it can also be prevented by adding chlorine to water you're using.
Q. How is it cured?
Only primary amebic meningoencephalitis can be treated in rare cases by:
i. Combination of some drugs
ii. Therapeutic hypothermia
iii. Surgical Intervention
Things to be remembered...
1. It's very rare but some cases have been reported in Pakistan
2. It's only caused when infected water enters through nose and up to the brain. This is also not an easy process that every time you put water into your nose, it may travel straight to brain and cause Naegleria.
3. It can only be treated after Early Diagnosis, quick administration and aggressive treatment. But patients may survive only once in a blue moon even after all that.
