Child Abuse

One of the worst crimes that innocent children have been facing for years is child abuse. Despite being so widespread and normalized, it mostly remains out of the spotlight.

What Is Child Abuse?

This refers to the intentional harming of a child who is under 18. It may involve the use of power, control, or trust in such a way that can cause injury, distress, or damage.

Who Could Be The Child Abuser?

The child abuser can be someone really close i.e. parents, relatives, close friends of parents, neighbors, caretakers/babysitters, or strangers whom they've definitely seen for the first time.

What Are The Reasons Behind Child Abuse?

  1. Children under 18 are considered too young to be taught the basic knowledge of abuse and ways to prevent it.

  2. They're too innocent to explain anything to their trusted ones. In fact, many culprits think that the victims may find it difficult to identify the criminal.

  3. Guardians or parents don't keep an eye on their children.

  4. Most children, after being abused, are suppressed by their own guardians to keep quiet and avoid sharing it with anyone. Yet they don't know that this forced suppression and silence is enough to ruin their entire life ahead.

What Are The Types of Child Abuse?

  1. Physical Abuse: Using physical means i.e., hitting, kicking, etc., to cause pain, cuts, bruises, burns, or even bone-breaking.

  2. Emotional Abuse: Behaving in a way that may ruin a child's self-worth and mental health, like constant yelling, shaming, and insulting.

  3. Molestation: Forcing a child to either witness or be a part of pornography.

  4. Neglect: Failure to provide basic necessities i.e., safe housing, proper food, clothing, hygiene, adequate medical care, education, or supervision.

Why Is Child Abuse So Much Normalized?

The root cause is that children are easy to manipulate and control because they are unaware of the harsh realities of the world. Perpetrators easily trap and exploit them, forcing them into silence through threats and intimidation.

How Does Child Abuse Impact Mental Health?

While physical injuries vary depending on the nature of the abuse, the psychological impact is profound and enduring. Victims often battle severe anxiety and depression, developing deep-seated trauma. Even well into adulthood, many survivors continue to carry the heavy burden of these painful memories.

What Is The Major Problem?

The most distressing thing is that people belonging to under-educated communities usually don't open up about such cases. They're afraid of their child's upcoming life. In fact, many parents/guardians usually try to suppress the victim rather than exposing the culprit or the crime that has been committed.

But what's the point of suppressing a victim and letting the criminal roam around freely?

How To Overcome Child Abuse?

  1. First and the most important thing is that children must be taught about personal privacy, bodily autonomy, and the basic difference between good touch or bad touch.

  2. They must be confident enough to trust their parents and report any kind of mishap to them immediately.

  3. Cases must be opened up so that others may know what kind of abuse a child may go through.

  4. If there's any case, it must be handled wisely rather than blaming the child for all that.

  5. Not just parents, but educational organizations must arrange workshops and campaigns to teach them this.

Which Organizations Work For Counter-Acting Child Abuse?

1. International Organizations:
a. UNICEF: Defends child rights, supplies aid, and fights violence, trafficking, and abuse worldwide.
b. ECPAT: Focused strictly on ending the exploitation, trafficking, and pornography of children.
c. ISPCAN: Works along with global professionals to prevent all forms of child maltreatment.

2. National Organizations:
a. Sahil: A prominent Pakistani non-governmental organization working extensively on public awareness, data collection on child abuse, and support services.
b. Konpal Child Abuse Prevention Society: Based in Karachi, this voluntary group focuses on ending child sexual abuse and hazardous child labor.
c. PAHCHAAN: Based in Lahore, it provides educational support and family counseling to safeguard at-risk children.

  2. This is such an important and powerful blog. You've explained everything so clearly from the causes to the impact — and I especially loved how you highlighted that suppressing the victim only helps the criminal. That part hit hard. We need more people like you who speak up for children who can’t speak for themselves. Really proud of you for writing this. Keep raising awareness. 🤍

  3. Child abuse like hitting a child or yelling at them because of a minor mistake has become normalised and people don't even bat an eye when they hear about it. It's become a part of our daily routine. This topic needs more awareness and needs to be discussed more.
